Yiannis was born in Greece in 1946, the first son of the renowned teacher of 'Rebetika', Theodoros Polykandriotis. Theodoros died 12th February 2004, aged 81, and this site is dedicated to his memory.

Yiannis started playing the bouzouki in 1956 and has since enjoyed an illustrious career. He has accompanied some of the most popular Greek artists in night-clubs, on-stage recording and on television. He began his career in 1958 playing with Prodromos Tsaousakhs, Anthoulla Alifrangi and with his father at Egaleo in Psatha. Singers he has worked with include: Yiannis Parios, Poli Panou, Rita Sakellariou, Stamatis Kokotas, Stratos Dionysiou, Yiannis Poulopoulos, Vasilis Tsitsanis, Giorgos Zambetas, Yiota Lydia, Eleni Vitali and many others.
On stage he has appeared with Rena Vlahopoulou, Sotiris Moustakas, Maro Kontou, Stavros Paravas, Kostas Karras, as well as having
provided backing for singers Terry Chrisos and Cleo Denardou. He has toured extensively for concerts in Australia, Canada, USA
and France, where he performed with Pascal Daniel at the theatre 'Olympique'. Since 1981, he has been following in the footsteps of
his father 'the teacher' and has been teaching the Rebetiko style and the art of the bouzouki, baglama and tzoura.
He is now a recording bouzouki virtuoso with a repertoire of works by leading Greek singers and composers. He combines excellent
musicianship and expressive performance skill - qualities for which he is valued by composers and singers alike. He currently lives
in the UK and continues the mission of his father - to convey to a larger audience the unique sound of Rebetiko music as well as contemporary
Greek music.
Yiannis Polykandriotis can be heard on the radio programme 'Rebetiki Anthologia' on London Greek Radio (LGR 103.3FM) every Saturday between the hours of 9:00pm and 10:00pm (UK time).
